With the series win, the Pirates improved to 41-40 and are above .500 at the halfway point of the season for the first time since 2015. Although Pittsburgh had goals of reaching the playoffs year, Pirates manager Don Kelly believes the team is in a good spot.
“There’s a better team that we’ll see in the second half; they’re more consistent,” Kelly said postgame on Thursday. “We need to play better in order to get to where we want to go. We’re in a good spot, but we’re not there yet.”
Although Pittsburgh isn’t in a playoff spot right now, the Pirates believe they have much better baseball in front of them.
“Every person in the world wants to be 20 games over [.500], or whatever the best record in baseball is right now. But that’s not the reality of our situation,” Brandon Lowe said. “There are definitely some games there that, both sides of the ball, we probably lost versus gotten beat, and everybody in here knows it. We understand it, and we move forward. We’re more cognizant of it, and if we don’t make those kinds of mistakes anymore, we win a lot more ball games.”
Pittsburgh will begin a three-game home series against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday at 6:40 p.m. ET.
