Pirates offense impressive through first half

By admin — In News — July 10, 2026

Major League Baseball is at its midpoint, and the Pittsburgh Pirates have emerged with one of the league’s most potent offenses through the first half of the season. It’s remarkable to see how quickly the Pirates turned around their offensive struggles from the previous year. In 2025, Pittsburgh ranked last in runs scored, home runs, RBIs and OPS, and they were near the bottom in nearly every other major statistical category. Now, in 2026, the script has flipped almost entirely for a revamped lineup. With contributors like Ryan O’Hearn and Brandon Lowe, this offense is posting top-tier totals across most statistical categories. By the halfway point, the Pirates are third in runs scored with 492, and they sit second in RBIs with 472, trailing only the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Their recent series win over the Washington Nationals may be even more impressive when you consider that Washington leads several offensive categories, underscoring how competitive Pittsburgh’s hitters have become. The Pirates’ bats have been notably more productive this season, with nearly every member of the lineup capable of contributing on any given night. Nick Gonzales has elevated his game to a new level, drawing serious consideration for the All-Star Game. Bryan Reynolds has also been a standout, delivering a steady and reliable output throughout the year. With players like these and several others contributing, Pittsburgh has climbed to the top of the league in total hits, recording 857 on the year—19 more than the second-ranked Dodgers.
Since Don Kelly took over as manager, aggressive base running has become a defining feature of the Pirates’ approach. As a result, Pittsburgh ranks fifth in baseball with 88 stolen bases. With speedsters such as Konnor Griffin and Oneil Cruz in the lineup, taking extra bags has become a strategic priority. The Pirates also aren’t getting caught very often, as they’re tied for the fourth-fewest times caught stealing, having been picked off or caught stealing only 16 times so far this season.
When it comes to batting averages, Pittsburgh is elite in several key areas. The team sits second in batting average, on-base percentage, and OPS, while ranking fifth in slugging. They have also shown greater patience at the plate, ranking sixth in walks. Pittsburgh is tied for seventh in home runs with 120, reflecting a balanced approach of power and contact. The one area that remains a clear concern is strikeouts; the Pirates lead the league with 860 punchouts, a carryover from last year and the only statistic that retains a familiar negative through the first half.
This lineup stands out as the best Pirates lineup in years, and at 47-47, they remain within reach of a wild-card berth. If the offense can maintain its current level of production through the second half, Pittsburgh could position itself as a dangerous contender down the stretch. With a potent mix of veteran presence and young speed, the Pirates are crafting a story that could drive attention and optimize search visibility as their season progresses.
