Cruz suffered a hand injury as he slid into home plate in the fourth inning on Sunday. He ended up suffering a fourth and fifth-metacarpal non-displaced fractures in his left hand.
Originally, the fractures didn’t come through on the X-Rays, but after Cruz continued to have pain in his hand, the Pirates sent him for an MRI, which revealed the fractures.
“What he’s shown this year growth-wise on the field as far as development, and then for him to battle through some things that he’s battled through this year … it stinks,” Pirates manager Don Kelly said.
With Cruz being placed on the 10-day injured list, the Pirates recalled outfielder Billy Cook from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Cook is hitting .291 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in Triple-A this season. He has appeared in 33 games with the Pirates this season, hitting .190.
As for Cruz, he’s hitting .264 with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs and is a key part of the Pirates’ offense.
The hope is that the injury won’t be that long, and Cruz can return to the Pirates lineup in the near future.
Pittsburgh will look to win its series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.
