The Pittsburgh Pirates are a fascinating team at the 2026 MLB trade deadline, as they’re not atop the NL Central, and they’re in fact third in the division. They don’t even have a Wild Card spot at the moment, either. But, at 55-55 with just a few days to go until the trade deadline, they have a real chance to buy and upgrade an already fairly strong roster.Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report is urging the Pirates to avoid making a simple, but costly and lackluster mistake at the MLB trade deadline. That mistake? Failing to see this iteration of the Pirates through by buying at the deadline.”Mistake to Avoid: Failing to see this effort through,” Miller writes. “… Paul Skenes isn’t getting any younger, and he certainly won’t be getting any cheaper. This is the window to go all-in.”While the Pirates don’t have to sell all of their top prospects to go all-in at the MLB trade deadline, they can be willing to part with some of their best prospects to land controllable options at positions of need. This club could really benefit from a high-leverage reliever, and while Mason Miller doesn’t seem like a real possibility, Adrian Morejon, Luke Weaver, and other available closers should be high on their list of deadline targets.Pittsburgh could also consider upgrading the offense, which is already elite, by acquiring a right-handed power hitter to bolster the team’s starting lineup and enhance the depth chart in one move. After years of toiling at the bottom of the standings, the Pirates finally have a chance to make a push for the postseason, and could do so by acquiring help at this year’s deadline. If they don’t make any moves, it would be incredibly disappointing. Having such a promising team with an elite rotation and offense, yet not addressing the weak bullpen, would be a waste.Miller is urging the Pirates to swing a trade or two this summer, and go all-in. While Seth Hernandez and Edward Florentino could be off the table as trade chips, just about every other prospect should be available for trade. They’re just 2.0 games back in the NL Wild Card, and have a chance to finally return to the postseason. Now is the time for the Pirates to commit assets to picking up help at the trade deadline, not standing pat or selling.
