​The Pittsburgh Pirates made a few moves ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline. One of those moves was to acquire veteran relief pitcher Luke Weaver from the New York Mets.Weaver was not just a pickup for this season, he also will be under contract for the 2027 season.Prior to being acquired by the Pirates, the 33-year-old right-hander pitched in 42 games for the Mets. He compiled a 2-1 record to go along with a 1.84 ERA, a 0.82 WHIP, a 4.1 K/BB ratio, 44 innings pitched, a save, 15 holds, and two blown saves.Since being a member of the Pittsburgh franchise, Weaver’s numbers have not been good.In 10 appearances, Weaver has produced a 5.79 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, a 2.8 K/BB ratio, three holds, and two blown saves in just 9.1 innings pitched.With that being said, Weaver recently spoke out and revealed that he has been dealing with a surprising health condition that popped up shortly after he arrived with the Pirates. He shared that he has been working through poison ivy.“I’ve had my own set of personal challenges over the last month, and I’ve kept them to myself, but at the end of the day, I’ve had almost a month worth of severe poison ivy. To the point where I’ve just been in hives over my entire lower body. I got it in Miami (three weeks ago), so shortly after getting here. Brushed up against a bush and my body went into a really bad state,” Weaver said.”I’ve been fighting my own personal battle on sleep. I haven’t slept in about a month. I wake up a lot. But that’s my own deal. I’m trying to find ways every single day.”Needless to say, Weaver is dealing with a unique issue that most baseball players don’t deal with during the season. Pitching through poison ivy would be difficult, to say the least.While the poison ivy revelation is surprising, that hasn’t stopped fans from being frustrated. Weaver came into the organization pitching well in New York, but has fallen off since the trade.Thankfully, the deal was never about a half-season rental. Weaver has a track record of being a successful relief pitcher in Major League Baseball. The Pirates will have that veteran presence in their bullpen next season as well.
