If there was a sticking pain point for Georgia’s defense last season, it was a noticeable absence of the relentless pass rush that Bulldog fans have come to expect under Kirby Smart. Georgia’s defense did enough to get by for the most part, but it didn’t feel truly elite. It wasn’t overwhelmingly special. The unit did its job, but it didn’t meet the lofty standards that have become the norm in Athens.
That doesn’t mean fans should anticipate a talent transplant of the caliber of Nolan Smith, Nakobe Dean, or Jalen Carter, but it does suggest there should be a visible, unyielding effort to harass the quarterback. The bottom line is simple: Georgia cannot afford to finish last in sacks again. And the performance of this year’s edge rush group will be decisive in determining whether that goal becomes a reality or a missed opportunity.
This year’s group is rich in potential, yet unproven. At the forefront is Quintavius Johnson, who has shown flashes of ability in the past and is now expected to step forward as the primary pass-rush threat. In baseball terms, he’s a promising prospect who will grow with more at-bats; for Johnson, the moment to deliver is now.
Then there’s Gabe Harris, who started last season after a stint of rotational duty prior. Could he be one of those players who blossoms with time under a coaching staff known for refining talent? It wouldn’t be surprising if that development path plays out.
But perhaps the most compelling subplot involves Chase Linton. A player who transferred from Rutgers might not initially move the needle for everyone, yet there’s more to the story. Linton’s long, rangy frame could give Georgia a unique matchup advantage in the pass rush, and spring practice buzz has hinted that he could emerge as a factor this fall.
Inside linebackers like Justin Williams and Chris Cole will contribute to the pass rush, no doubt, but the team’s overall success will hinge on the edge group. If Georgia is going to reclaim the defensive identity it’s known for, the edge rushers must rise to the occasion and deliver relentless pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Go Dawgs! This is more than just sentiment—it’s a call for a return to domination at the line of scrimmage, anchored by a relentless pass rush that can set the tone for the defense and for the season.
