Wayne Newton Post 346 missed an Indiana American Legion Baseball State Tournament title by the slimmest of margins last week, seemingly ending the Terre Haute team’s stellar season.Post 346 lost 1-0 to Valparaiso last Tuesday in the state championship game, allowing Valpo to advance into the next round at the Great Lakes Regional. But last weekend, the Wisconsin state champion opted not to participate, the Terre Haute squad was offered an invitation to participate, and now the Post 346 team leaves Tuesday to compete in the eight-team field of the regional at Kentucky Proud Park in Lexington. Play in the double-elimination tournament begins Wednesday and concludes Sunday.Ironcially, Wayne Newton, with a sparkling 34-5 season record, drew Valparaiso for a opening-day matchup at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Post 346 then plays either Washington, Missouri or Owensboro, Kentucky on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. (if Terre Haute loses Wednesday) or 4 p.m. (if Terre Haute wins Wednesday). Also in the field are teams from Pittsburg, Kansas; Midland, Michigan; Aviston, Illinois and Lexington.
