PSG Shows Strong Interest in Japan’s World Cup Sensation

The World Cup 2026 has left both soccer fans and major clubs impressed by the high quality of players showcased, and Paris Saint-Germain appears to be among those taking notice. While many of the so-called “discoveries” were already known within their own clubs, the tournament offered other teams a clear view of rising talents they could target, and one player who fits that description is Japan’s national team goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, aged 23.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, as reported by Get French Football News, PSG is reportedly very keen on the young Japanese shot-stopper for the upcoming summer transfer window, with talks reportedly already underway and progressing quickly. Suzuki has been with Parma Calcio 1913 since June 2024 and has made an immediate impression. Although his form last season featured some variability, he remains widely regarded as a very capable goalkeeper with significant potential.
But PSG is not the only club tracking Suzuki. Aston Villa has also shown interest in the Parma custodian. The Villans are seeking a successor to their incumbent goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez, who could depart the club in the near future amid rumors linking him with Juventus. In addition, journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Newcastle United has asked about Zion Suzuki’s current status. He notes that Parma is aware of the major suitors and will weigh options that best fit both their financial considerations and Suzuki’s career aspirations.
Even so, a move to Paris Saint-Germain could face hurdles. The competition for a starting spot in PSG’s lineup is fierce, and at present Suzuki might not be the most practical option for the club. Recent days have brought additional context: PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier is reportedly ready to return and contend for the starting role opposite Matvey Safonov, the goalkeeper who helped lead the team to this year’s Champions League title. Both Chevalier and Safonov are highly capable, which would complicate Suzuki’s path to regular first-team football in Paris.
Furthermore, PSG announced the addition of 18-year-old Alessandro Longoni at the start of July, who will occupy a third-choice position within the club’s goalkeeper hierarchy. This creates even less immediate room for Suzuki to push for substantial minutes, particularly in a squad already stacked with goalkeeper options. Consequently, while the prospect of Suzuki arriving at PSG remains intriguing to fans and analysts, it seems unlikely in the short term that he would displace the club’s established or rising keepers.
With a contract that runs through 2030, Zion Suzuki’s future looks uncertain for the moment, at least with Paris Saint-Germain. The question now is which other major club might pursue him next and how that destination could influence his development and visibility on the world stage. As interest from top European clubs continues to surface, Suzuki’s impressive form for Parma and his standout moments at the World Cup 2026 will likely keep him at the center of transfer conversations throughout the summer window. The ongoing speculation underscores the bright trajectory of a goalkeeper whose calm composure, reflexes, and decision-making have already begun to carve out his niche among Europe’s rising talents.
