Questions surround the future and fit of a Manchester City attacker

Omar Marmoush is a player capable of producing moments of genuine quality, yet on other occasions he can be a source of frustration. The Egyptian international made a bright impression upon joining Manchester City during the January 2025 transfer window, contributing goals that helped the club secure Champions League football for the previous season. In those early days, he appeared to be on track to become an important squad member, a player with the potential to make a real impact.
Since then, Marmoush has faced a series of challenges that have disrupted his consistency. The 2025-26 campaign proved difficult, with a knee injury forcing him to miss several fixtures in the early stages. He also spent a lengthy spell away due to Egypt’s AFCON commitments, further hampering his ability to establish rhythm at City. When he returned, Pep Guardiola seemed to view Marmoush mainly as a backup option to Erling Haaland, rather than a first-choice contributor.
His World Cup experience with Egypt offered little reward. Marmoush delivered a subdued display as Egypt advanced on penalties against Australia in the Round of 32, and he came on as a substitute as they were eliminated 3-2 by Argentina in the Round of 16. Across four appearances at the tournament, he failed to score or assist, and despite taking eleven shots, he could not produce the decisive moments he’d have hoped for. This underscored a broader pattern: Marmoush can spark that spectacular quality, but he also tends to drift toward the periphery and is sometimes let down by a poor touch. To reach his best, he needs to sharpen both consistency and execution.
Watching Marmoush for City and for Egypt, it’s clear he possesses the talent to thrill. Yet the challenge lies in converting occasional flashes of brilliance into a reliable, sustained contribution. A more settled role could help him recapture the form that made him standout during his time with Eintracht Frankfurt, a period that earned him a move to the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. When he’s in his flow, Marmoush can uplift the team; when he isn’t, his impact diminishes and he becomes easy to overlook.
From a tactical standpoint, Marmoush’s best position remains a topic of debate. Guardiola has tended to deploy him primarily as Haaland’s deputy, with the ability to operate on the left and drift centrally. However, with Jeremy Doku locking down the left wing, there is a question mark over how Pep will best utilize Marmoush. Ideally, he would function effectively by playing off Haaland, exploiting space to stretch defenses and exploit quick combinations. Whether Enzo Maresca will adopt that approach remains to be seen, and the evolving tactics at City will shape Marmoush’s role.
There has been speculation, highlighted in The Athletic’s Transfer DealSheet segment by Sam Lee, that Marmoush could depart Manchester City this summer. Whether any club is prepared to meet City’s asking price or match Marmoush’s wages remains uncertain, and the outcome will depend on the market and City’s strategic priorities in the transfer window. At present, it’s difficult to see City agreeing to sell Marmoush, given his relatively limited time at the club and the potential upside he still represents. The summer window will reveal whether the Egyptian international remains part of City’s plans or if a move elsewhere would unlock a more central role for him.
