"Holds The Ball For Too Long": Ex-NBA Champion Offers No Excuses for Caitlin Clark’s Injury, Points to Bigger Problem

By admin — In News — July 10, 2026

Caitlin Clark returned to the floor for the Indiana Fever against the Los Angeles Sparks and posted 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists in 16 minutes. Yet her performance was also marked by four costly turnovers in a 106-92 defeat to Indiana’s matchup later in the week, highlighting a recurring issue that has drawn scrutiny beyond the box score. This topic was a focal point on the Club 520 basketball podcast, where former NBA champion Jeff Teague and his older brother Marquis Teague, joined by host DJ Wells, offered blunt criticism of Clark’s play and the turnover problem.
“Caitlin Clark and these f— turnovers, bro. I know that you’re the only person like me who likes to publicly talk about how bad they are. But we went on this stretch yesterday with her in the game, and it just got bad. I know she’s back from an injury but…” Wells said, setting the stage for a broader discussion about how Clark’s ball-handling has affected the Fever during crucial stretches. Jeff Teague doubled down, saying, “She holds the ball too long,” with Marquis quickly agreeing, “She does, she definitely holds the ball too long, bro. Like she wanna score or make the assist?”
Clark’s turnover struggles aren’t a new storyline. Fox Sports notes that the Fever point guard is leading the league with an average of 4.6 turnovers per game. The next-highest figure on the list, Alyssa Thomas, sits at 3.8 turnovers per game, well behind Clark’s pace. In Clark’s favor, she also leads Indiana with 7.9 assists per game, but those assists come with a price: several of her passes translate into turnovers, an issue Jeff Teague and others have repeatedly flagged.
Analysts have weighed in from across networks as well. NBC’s Kate Scott addressed Clark’s high turnover rate during a May game, suggesting that while her turnover numbers are steep, her handiwork in creating offense via assists still helps balance the stat line. “So I looked things up, just compared to the NBA leaders in assists. Nikola Jokic, about 10 assists per game, four turnovers a game. Cade Cunningham… about nine-and-a-half assists per game, four turnovers a game himself,” Scott remarked, citing the broader context of playmaking in the league. Yet Scott concurred that Clark’s role often requires her to hold the ball and set up plays, which translates into more opportunities to turn it over. “Why are people saying, ‘Caitlin’s turning the ball over’? Yeah, because she holds the basketball for the majority of the 40 minutes.”
The Fever, sitting at a 13-9 record, entered the season as a clear favorite to contend for a WNBA Championship. The turnover issue, however, has sparked questions about how much it might derail Indiana’s progress as the season unfolds. Will Clark’s ball-security improvements keep pace with her playmaking and scoring, or will the turnovers continue to complicate the Fever’s path to consistent success? Only time will tell as Indiana navigates a season where early expectations met a few growing pains on the court.
