Radek Vitek: Why Celtic are targeting Man United goalkeeper

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

After finding success with Senne Lammens last summer, Manchester United now risk losing another highly rated young goalkeeper as Radek Vitek draws interest from multiple clubs, with Celtic reportedly joining the pursuit. Vitek, 22, joined United as a 16-year-old prospect from Czech side SK Sigma Olomouc and quickly progressed through the ranks at Old Trafford, delivering a string of impressive performances along the way.
When Vitek was ready for senior football, a loan spell was arranged with Accrington Stanley. Since then, he has endured similar loan experiences with Blau-Weiß Linz in Austria and, most recently, Bristol City. At the Robins, Vitek shone, initially serving as a back-up to Max O’Leary, the long-time No.1 who had suffered a serious ankle injury during pre-season last year. O’Leary’s departure from Ashton Gate six months after Vitek’s arrival underscored just how impressive the Czech under-20 international had been between the sticks for his adopted club. The 6’6” shot-stopper smoothly adapted to the Championship’s direct and physical approach, delivering a series of standout displays that quickly won him the affection of Bristol City supporters.
That affection is mutual, with Vitek claiming three end-of-season awards: Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, and Players’ Player of the Year. Despite such a glittering run of form, Vitek is poised to leave Manchester United this summer, potentially on loan or via a permanent transfer, as he seeks regular first-team football. The strong performances of Lammens in the No.1 role leave little room for a young and ambitious deputy. With Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir both expected to depart, United have already prepared for the future by agreeing a free transfer for Wales international Karl Darlow to serve as back-up. Tom Heaton also signed a new contract last month to maintain his place as third-choice, having developed a strong rapport with Lammens. The English veteran has become a crucial figure in the dressing room.
The goalkeeping pecking order, however, has left Vitek actively considering a departure, though no decision has yet been made about whether his exit would be permanent or temporary. Nevertheless, a host of clubs have already shown interest, including Bristol City, who are eager for his return, Premier League newcomers Hull City, and Rangers from Scotland. Now Celtic have joined the race, according to Football Insider, as the Hoops seek a new goalkeeper after clinching their 56th Scottish league title. Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has publicly indicated that he is in the market for a new stopper. With two years still remaining on Vitek’s contract at Old Trafford, Celtic are hoping United will consider cashing in this summer. The report describes the situation as a setup where Vitek’s next move could be shaped by the club’s willingness to sell and the destination that best suits both player and parent club.
