Rainbow Flags Permitted At Egypt Vs Iran Match After FIFA Decision

With the World Cup well underway, FIFA has confirmed that rainbow flags will be permitted inside the Group G fixture between Egypt and Iran in Seattle on Saturday (27 June), despite objections from both national federations over Pride-related activity surrounding the game.
The match had already been designated a “Pride Match” by Seattle PrideFest, a local non-profit that has organised Pride celebrations in the city since 2007. The designation for the game was set before FIFA finalised the World Cup draw.

Both Iran and Egypt reportedly raised concerns with FIFA, calling for LGBTQ+ themed events linked to the fixture to be cancelled.
For context, the Human Dignity Trust notes that both countries maintain laws criminalising same-sex relations. In Iran, these laws can carry the death penalty, while in Egypt same-sex conduct can be punished by up to three years in prison and fines.
FIFA confirmed on Thursday that rainbow flags will be allowed inside Seattle Stadium, describing the World Cup as “an inclusive event that welcomes people from all backgrounds.”

“General statements of human rights, including rainbow flags and other flags representing sexual orientation and gender identity, are permitted under the FIFA World Cup 2026 Stadium Code of Conduct and may be displayed inside stadiums,” they stated.

Patti Hearn, executive director of Seattle Pride, also said the rainbow flag is widely seen as a symbol of human rights, visibility, and inclusivity.
She told Reuters: “The rainbow flag or any of the Pride flags are just a symbol of inclusivity, of community, of love — and that really isn’t offensive.
“There are queer people everywhere. If we can provide the opportunity for the world stage to see and experience what it feels like to be in a welcoming and inclusive place … I think that’s great.”
