Myles Garrett could add more hardware before taking the field for his first snap with the Los Angeles Rams. The potential return of Aaron Donald has drawn attention from another Rams legend. Donald’s possible comeback could spell trouble for Braden Fisk, as speculation swirls about whether the defensive stalwart will unretire to rejoin the Rams after their blockbuster trade that brought in the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. Garrett has expressed a stronger interest in playing alongside Donald, and Donald himself has said he is intrigued by the idea, even as he has not yet made a decision about unretiring.
Garrett appears to be taking a more proactive role in trying to recruit Donald than he previously admitted. Recently, Donald was seen at the Rams’ facilities, notably on the practice field, continuing a pattern of activity that has fueled speculation about a potential reunion. Garrett’s push to bring Donald back has intensified, with him publicly signaling his desire to pair with the Rams legend.
Donald acknowledged in a conversation with ESPN’s Pat McAfee, reported by McAfee, that Garrett’s move to the Rams had him contemplating retirement, a notion he has consistently rejected in the past. Rams head coach Sean McVay has also acknowledged the delicate nature of Donald’s decision. McVay’s approach appears to be evolving, and Garrett’s actions seem to be following suit, sparking online chatter.
On July 11, Garrett posted an image on his Instagram story captioned with him “moving in,” followed by another showing him “unpacking… [shrug emoji],” alongside a jersey that Donald had autographed for him. Although Garrett did not tag Donald in the post, the message quickly circulated, reinforcing the ongoing conversation about a potential pairing. From the outset, Garrett has made clear that he respects Donald’s previously stated position.
“I don’t want to pressure him,” Garrett said on the New Heights podcast in June. “I want him to find that spark.” He added, “He walked away from the game feeling so fulfilled. Like, ‘I’ve done everything. I’ve won everything. I’ve beat everybody.’ It’s like, ‘All right, I don’t need anything more.’ If he looks up, he’s like, ‘Huh, I might need another one.’ And he’s like, ‘MG, you want to run it?’ Shoot, why not?”
Donald has yet to decide if an NFL return is the right move for him. His recent workouts at the Rams’ facilities have given him encouragement about a possible comeback. Donald has frequently been present in the Rams’ weight room and practice spaces, and his recent activity suggests he is evaluating what a return could mean for his legacy.
As the conversation around a potential reunion with Garrett continues to unfold, the Rams’ defense could be positioned for a dramatic upgrade if Donald chooses to return. Whether Donald will rekindle his playing career remains uncertain, but Garrett’s renewed efforts to recruit him have certainly intensified the intrigue surrounding the Rams’ defense and their post-trade plans.
