​The Kansas City Royals might have found a gem in Randy Dobnak after the 31-year-old had his second-consecutive scoreless start on Wednesday against the AL Central rival Minnesota Twins.Despite allowing four hits, Dobnak recorded four strikeouts while inducing five flyouts and giving up a single walk through seven innings of work. This would be enough to earn him his first win since 2021 as his opponent, right-hander Joe Ryan, took the loss.”It’s pretty surreal, it’s kind of cool, but yeah I was kind of just locked in,” Dobnak said in a postgame interview. “I know what I need to do, execute my pitches and see what happens. I kind of fell behind a few counts, but I was able to make some competitive pitches in those counts I was behind.”He added: “When he [manager Matt Quatraro] came up to me after the 6th, he said ‘I know we don’t know each other too long, but how are you feeling?’ I said, ‘Give me the ball.””’ Dobnak would have a similar night last Thursday against the Detroit Tigers, forcing nine groundouts and striking out three batters in five innings pitched. However, his efforts were insufficient for the Royals to come out with a win as reliever Steven Cruz surrendered two hits and one earned run, resulting in a 4-3 loss.Regardless, Dobnak’s recent outings have been a tremendous improvement from his relief outing on July 2 in which he allowed six hits and two earned runs across four innings of action.”I think I did a good job of mixing my pitches, any count, and kept them off guard,” he said.Prior to joining Kansas City, Dobnak pitched a single game for Minnesota last season on March 30 against the St. Louis Cardinals. He would allow two hits and one earned run through 5.1 innings, but the Twins came up short 9-2. Dobnak then signed a minor-league contract with the Seattle Mariners in November. However, that stint was short-lived as he exercised his upward mobility clause, prompting the Mariners to ship him off to the Royals in exchange for cash considerations on June 17 this season.“In the back of my head, I always knew,” Dobnak told The Star Tribune. “My stuff is better now than it’s ever been. All I ever wanted was just an opportunity. KC gave me an opportunity and here I am.”Dobnak will look to continue to shine the next time he toes the rubber, however, that has yet to be announced by the team.
