It was a trying season for the New York Rangers, who failed to reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs and finished with the worst home record in the NHL, enduring several discouraging shutouts. In the midst of this difficult stretch, general manager Chris Drury wrote a fans’ letter acknowledging that painful decisions would be required, and indicating that Artemi Panarin would be traded to the Los Angeles Kings, a move that would be followed by the eventual trade of Vincent Trocheck to the Utah Mammoth after the season concluded.
Despite the chaos, the Rangers made some notable acquisitions that drew interest for the future. They added a promising goal-scoring forward in Pavel Dorofeyev from the Vegas Golden Knights, securing him with a multi-year contract extension. They also obtained Sean Durzi from the Mammoth as part of the Trocheck deal. In goal, they landed Joonas Korpisalo from their Original Six rival, the Boston Bruins, to back up Igor Shesterkin after the retirement of Jonathan Quick.
Looking ahead, speculation has arisen about whether another prominent member of the current lineup could be moved in the upcoming season. Bleacher Report’s Lyle Richardson floated the possibility that Rangers defenseman Adam Fox, a 2021 Norris Trophy winner and a cornerstone of the team’s defensive structure, might seek a change of scenery at some point. Richardson noted Fox’s status as one of the NHL’s elite puck-moving defensemen and highlighted how the club’s decline since its Presidents’ Trophy campaign of 2023–24 could be weighing on him. Fox himself drew eyebrows in February by offering noncommittal responses when asked about his long-term future with the Rangers, insisting he was focused on the season and that questions about his future were best saved for the offseason.
Richardson also examined Fox’s contract situation, which includes a no-trade clause that would allow him to veto any potential deal. Fox is signed through 2028–29 with an average annual value of $9.5 million and holds a full no-movement clause, meaning a trade would require his consent. Nevertheless, there is a sense that Fox could be uneasy about the direction of the Rangers under Drury’s retooling approach. The team’s fortunes have yet to improve since their disappointing finish, and Fox, now 28, may be weighing his chances of competing for a Stanley Cup with a franchise that is aligned with a clearer path to contention.
Fox’s concerns were underscored when he commented on the retooling process, suggesting that the situation was unusual and difficult to navigate. “For me, it was just, we’re still in a unique situation,” he said, acknowledging that not many players have lived through such a retooling phase and hinting at the broader uncertainty surrounding the club’s direction. As the Rangers continue to rebuild and retool, all eyes will be on whether Fox remains with the team through the peak of their transition or if the potential for a trade materializes at some point during the upcoming season.
