Rangers Identify This In-Demand Midfield Star As A Summer Target: Why McInnes Must Make The Call

If a recent Sky Sports Switzerland report is to be believed, Rangers have earmarked Ryan Fosso as a summer target and are currently in talks with his representatives. They are not alone in the race, however, as Spanish side Levante, Italian clubs Torino and an unnamed Serie A outfit are all pursuing the Sturm Graz midfield maestro. Fosso, born in Switzerland in 2002, is a Switzerland-born Cameroonian international who rose through the renowned Young Boys academy, featuring regularly for their reserve teams in the Swiss lower divisions. He later joined Vaduz in the second tier before moving to the Netherlands, where he completed a Bosman transfer to Fortuna Sittard. His breakout performances in the Eredivisie drew Sturm Graz’s attention, and the Austrian giants secured his services earlier this year for a fee reported to be around €900,000.
Since arriving at Die Schwoazn, Fosso has quickly established himself as a first-team regular in midfield. His poise as a deep-lying playmaker, combined with his technical ability and precise passing, has made him one of the most coveted players in this transfer window. With 14 appearances since making the move in January, he has become crucial to Sturm Graz’s bid to reclaim Austrian Bundesliga glory. Yet a substantial bid from suitors could compel his current club to sanction a sale for a substantial financial windfall.
In other developments, an image from Sydney, Australia, captured Fosso challenging Aiden O’Neill during a FIFA Series match between the Socceroos and Cameroon at Accor Stadium on March 27, 2026, underscoring Fosso’s growing international profile.
Rangers have been exceptionally active this summer as part of a broader rebuild under the guidance of Derek McInnes, who was appointed Ibrox chief after Danny Röhl’s departure to Red Bull Salzburg. Having already added five players to the squad, Rangers look set to back McInnes with further signings to put behind them last season’s disappointments. The club has already secured Dan Neil’s signature and remains in pursuit of a handful of midfield options. Among the names on their radar are Lewis Ferguson, Jens Hjertø-Dahl, and Vanja Dragojević, all seen as strong options for reinforcing the middle of the park.
Nevertheless, several variables loom over any potential deal, including the possibility of offloading fringe players such as Lyall Cameron and José Cifuentes in the near term. A potential player-plus-cash arrangement involving Connor Barron could surface to facilitate Ferguson’s arrival, while growing interest in Nicolas Raskin could push Rangers to part ways with the Belgian World Cup veteran if a suitable bid arrives.
Fosso’s reputation rests on more than just his passing range and tempo-setting capabilities. He excels at orchestrating play from deep, using smart positioning and a strong work rate to shield the defense and drive the team’s rhythm. His timely tackles, anticipation, and ball-carrying ability position him as a modern “number six” who can influence both phases of play. Whether Rangers are prepared to move decisively for him now or to pursue alternate targets remains to be seen; what is clear is that Fosso has emerged as one of the standout midfield talents in European football this summer, and his next destination could shape the trajectory of several clubs’ plans for the upcoming season.
