If a recent report from iTromsø, cited by The Daily Record, is accurate, Rangers have stepped up their pursuit of long-term target Jens Hjertø-Dahl by submitting a bid in the region of £5.3 million for the Tromsø midfielder. However, they may need to raise their offer, as the Eliteserien club is reluctant to let go of their prized asset after turning down the Light Blues’ initial approach. The 20-year-old Norwegian youth international has risen through Tromsø’s academy, making frequent appearances for the reserves in the fourth tier before earning senior status in 2022. Since then, Hjertø-Dahl has racked up 100 appearances across all competitions, including a bright start to the current campaign with five goals and two assists in 12 league games. This early form has attracted attention not only from Rangers’ domestic rivals but also from Premier League sides, with Brighton and Sunderland mentioned alongside the Glasgow giants.

Despite a revival under manager Danny Rohl, Rangers ended the season empty-handed, finishing third in the Premiership behind Celtic and Hearts. In response, the club’s management has embarked on a vigorous recruitment drive, bringing in five new names as part of a broader squad overhaul under new boss Derek McInnes. The Gers have already landed Dan Neil, a former Sunderland stalwart expected to drive play from central areas. Nicolas Raskin, Tochi Chukwuani, Connor Barron and Mohamed Diomande remain in the first-team fold, while Lyall Cameron and José Cifuentes have returned from loan spells. Rangers are also pursuing Lewis Ferguson and Vanja Dragojević, which could complicate the strategic rationale for pursuing Hjertø-Dahl if all these deals come to fruition.
Nevertheless, several players may depart in the coming weeks, potentially triggering a strategic reshuffle. Raskin has attracted significant interest from Europe’s top leagues, and a standout World Cup run for Belgium could significantly elevate his market value. There is even talk of a potential player-plus-ccash swap involving Ferguson, with Barron cited as a possible component of such a deal. Cameron and Cifuentes are not firmly in McInnes’s long-term plans and could be moved on this summer, while Diomande’s versatility as a player who can operate as a number eight, number ten, or wide midfielder makes him a valuable option. Hjertø-Dahl’s arrival would add depth and quality to a more central midfield axis, complementing Dan Neil, Ferguson, and Dragojević, should the other targeted moves unfold as hoped.
The 20-year-old’s profile centers on aerial prowess and robust physicality, particularly in a box-to-box role. His technical ability, precise passing, and late runs through the middle would suit McInnes’s high-energy, hard-working midfield philosophy, bringing a blend of tenacity and creativity to a midfield that already features a number of established pieces. Hjertø-Dahl’s addition would reinforce Rangers’ central options, providing depth and competition for places and potentially unlocking new tactical configurations for the squad as the transfer window progresses.
