Rangers Win Thriller Against Astros Before All-Star Break

The Texas Rangers edged the Houston Astros 6-5 on Sunday at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, extending their series win over their in-state rivals and nudging themselves above .500 at 49-47 while sitting atop the American League West as the All-Star break approaches. So how did Texas pull this one off?
The day looked promising early but remained tense throughout. Even with Josh Jung clubbing a leadoff triple in the first inning, the Rangers couldn’t capitalize right away. Their first real threat came in the second inning after Ezequiel Duran drew a one-out walk and Evan Carter doubled to put runners at second and third. That set the table for Nicky Lopez, who delivered, singling to right to drive in Duran. Joc Pederson followed with a two-out, two-RBI double to right, giving Texas a 3-0 advantage.
Texas appeared to be in control, but the Astros weren’t done. After the third inning produced no runs for either club, Houston mounted a comeback in the fourth. Rangers starter MacKenzie Gore had pitched well, notching two early strikeouts, but he surrendered a solo homer to Jose Altuve to trim the lead to 3-1. The Rangers still held a comfortable cushion, yet the fifth inning brought more offense for Texas when Jung walked and Brandon Nimmo tripled to bring him home, extending the lead.
Heading into the sixth with a 4-1 lead, Texas seemed poised for a steady finish. That plan began to unravel in the seventh when Ranger skipper Skip Schumaker turned to his bullpen, deploying Robby Ahlstrom as the third reliever of the night. The move backfired, as Houston started chipping away.
The Astros kicked off the seventh with a one-out single by Lamonte Wade Jr., followed by a single from Zach Dezenzo. With runners on, Schumaker summoned another reliever, Peyton Gray, but Gray walked Yainer Diaz to load the bases. A sacrifice fly from Jeremy Peña made it 4-2, and after Gray intentionally walked Yordan Álvarez, Isaac Paredes delivered a two-out, two-RBI single that tied the game at 4-4.
To complicate matters, Texas’ lead evaporated in the eighth when Ben Pearson surrendered a solo homer to Cam Smith, trimming the advantage to 5-4 in favor of Houston. The Rangers, however, refused to cave. In the bottom of the eighth, Kyle Higashioka launched a solo shot to left, tying the score at 5-5.
With control shifting late, the Rangers delivered a dramatic finish in the ninth. Nimmo opened the frame with a walk, and after back-to-back singles by Wyatt Langford and Jung put runners on, Nimmo came through again with a walk-off RBI single, delivering the 6-5 victory for Texas.
The win sets the stage for the All-Star break with the Rangers at 49-47, positioned to surge into the second half. They’ll resume action on July 17 with a three-game series on the road against the Atlanta Braves, as they look to carry this momentum into the post-break stretch.
