Raptors Knew They Could be Held Responsible in Aspiration Scandal Before Kawhi Leonard Trade

By admin — In News — July 10, 2026

The Toronto Raptors decided to pursue a trade for Kawhi Leonard, even though the final conclusions of the Aspiration investigation were not yet known. The probe has been ongoing for ten months, and its conclusion remains uncertain. As the trade negotiations progressed, Toronto was widely expected to sign Leonard to a contract extension if the deal went through. However, on Thursday reports indicated that the trade was paused because the Raptors could face penalties depending on the investigation’s findings, should any sanctions be levied.
According to an insider, the Raptors were aware of this potential consequence well before they moved to acquire Leonard. Eric Koreen of The Athletic relayed that, based on information from sources who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing league inquiry, the NBA informed Toronto several days prior to the deal’s agreement that the Raptors would proceed at their own risk. Specifically, the Raptors would bear responsibility for any penalties imposed on Leonard (but not on the Clippers) if the trade was completed and Leonard’s contract ultimately was voided, Koreen noted.
This framing suggests Toronto knew the risks in advance of finalizing the trade. Suggesting that the team only recently learned of these possible consequences would be inaccurate, given Koreen’s reporting. In essence, Toronto appeared willing to shoulder that risk long before the actual trade with the Clippers was executed.
At present, the trade remains on hold until the Aspiration investigation concludes. There is no publicly announced timetable for closure, and although the inquiry has stretched for ten months, officials from both clubs have indicated that the process may be nearing a resolution. The language coming from the teams implies that the investigation is close to completion, yet no firm deadline has been provided.
Regardless of what the investigation eventually reveals, the Raptors are taking a considerable gamble in pursuing Leonard. He is an exceptionally injury-prone player, and last season marked only the second time since the 2016-17 campaign that he appeared in at least 65 games. When healthy, Leonard delivered what could be described as one of the best seasons of his career in 2025-26, yet there are no assurances that he will remain healthy enough for Toronto to reap the expected benefits. The volume of assets involved in the deal amplifies the risk for the Raptors, making this a high-stakes proposition for the franchise.
The previous time Toronto acquired Leonard, he played a pivotal role in helping the team clinch its first NBA championship, a historic achievement that underscored the potential upside of the collaboration. As the new discussions unfold and the investigation nears its end, Toronto’s decision to press forward with this trade will be judged in the context of both the gamble on Leonard’s peak performance and the broader implications of the ongoing inquiry. The situation continues to draw substantial attention as fans and analysts weigh the chances of a resolution and the potential impact on Toronto’s long-term plans.
