Raptors trade for Kawhi Leonard reportedly can’t be completed until NBA’s investigation into Clippers ends

The investigation remains ongoing, and ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that the deal to trade Kawhi Leonard cannot be finalized until the NBA closes its case. In response, the Clippers released a statement to ESPN detailing their cooperation with the league over the past ten months as the allegations have been reviewed. The statement reiterates the team’s insistence on its innocence, stating clearly that the Clippers “did not funnel money to Kawhi Leonard” and that “We have not done what we are accused of doing.” The organization emphasized its long-standing commitment to transparency, noting that it has cooperated fully with the NBA investigation by participating in numerous interviews, supplying tens of thousands of documents, and granting access to staff members despite the challenges involved.
The Clippers previously announced an agreement in principle to trade Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors on June 30. They have since been informed that the trade can only be finalized if the Raptors’ ownership group assumes the risk of penalties linked to Kawhi’s contract that could hypothetically arise from the ongoing investigation. As the investigation continues, the expectation remains that the trade will be completed once the case reaches its conclusion. The central focus of the inquiry involves Joe Sanberg and Aspiration, and the team is clear that it did not funnel funds to Kawhi Leonard through Aspiration. Instead, the Clippers indicate that they and other innocent parties were victims of a fraud perpetrated by Sanberg, who has since been convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison.
The team acknowledges the uncertainty this situation has created and the impact it has had on multiple stakeholders, including the organization itself, its fans, the Raptors organization and their supporters, and the players whose futures may be affected as the process unfolds. Despite these concerns, the Clippers remain confident that a fair and thorough evaluation of the facts will confirm what they have asserted from the outset: they did not engage in the conduct they are accused of. As the investigation progresses, the club expects the NBA’s findings to align with its long-standing position of innocence.
This is an evolving story, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available. The Clippers’ leadership underscored their commitment to transparency throughout the investigation and their belief that the final conclusions will vindicate their stance. They reiterated that the public and all stakeholders deserve clarity, and they will continue to communicate pertinent developments as the case nears its resolution.
