Rays Draft SS Grady Emerson Second Overall in 2026 MLB Draft

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

The Tampa Bay Rays have selected Grady Emerson, a dynamic two-way talent and standout shortstop from Fort Worth Christian High School in Texas, with the No. 2 overall pick in the first round of the 2026 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Emerson, 18, emerged as one of the top high school players in the country, earning the 2026 Gatorade National Player of the Year honor after a historic senior season at Fort Worth Christian. He posted a prodigious slash line of .532/.648/.1013, compiling 42 hits in 79 at-bats, including nine doubles and seven home runs. He drove in 50 runs, drew 27 walks, scored 39 times, and swiped 31 bases across 28 regular-season games, leading his team to a TAPPS Division II state finals appearance—the program’s first since 2019.
In addition to his Gatorade recognition, Emerson was named a 2026 Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, a distinction reserved for the nation’s top amateur baseball players. Since the award’s inception in 1978, only one other high school player has earned Golden Spikes recognition, Bobby Witt Jr. of Kansas City Royals fame in 2019, highlighting Emerson’s status among the elite high school talents nationwide. A University of Texas commit, Emerson transferred to Fort Worth Christian for his senior year and played under head coach Rusty Greer, a nine-year MLB veteran who spent time with the Texas Rangers from 1994 to 2002. Emerson now becomes the first player in Fort Worth Christian program history to be selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft.
Standing six-foot-three and weighing 185 pounds, Emerson is an infielder who began his high school career at Argyle High School in Texas, where he played from 2023 through 2025. His elite performance on the national stage includes multiple USA Baseball appearances, representing the United States on both the U-18 and U-15 national teams a combined four times between 2022 and 2025. He earned All-World honors at third base after guiding the U.S. squad to the gold medal at the 2025 WBSC U-18 World Cup in Okinawa, Japan. Emerson’s ability to contribute across multiple levels—hitting for power and average, base running, and fielding at an elite level—made him one of the most coveted prospects in the 2026 draft class. Notably, he is the first player in USA Baseball history to compete for both U-18 and U-15 national teams in multiple capacities, underscoring his versatility and long-term potential.
For the Rays, Emerson’s selection marks a continued commitment to acquiring high-ceiling, high-school talent within the organization’s long-standing draft philosophy. He becomes the seventh shortstop drafted by Tampa Bay with its first selection, and the fourth at the position in the last seven years, joining previous top picks such as Daniel Pierce (2025), Brayden Taylor (2023), Carson Williams (2021), Greg Jones (2019), Tim Beckham (2008), and B.J. Upton (2002). Emerson’s emergence as a top-tier shortstop aligns with the Rays’ track record of developing infielders who can contribute both offensively and defensively at the highest levels of professional baseball.
This pick comes as part of the Rays’ ongoing draft strategy, highlighting their continued success in selecting early and often in the first two rounds. The No. 2 overall selection was determined by the results of MLB’s fourth annual Draft Lottery, which took place December 9, 2025, during the MLB Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida. The Rays have a history of selecting early in the draft, having owned a top-two selection on multiple occasions: No. 1 overall in 2008 (Beckham), No. 1 in 2007 (David Price), No. 1 in 2003 (Delmon Young), and No. 2 in 1999 (Josh Hamilton), with B.J. Upton also going No. 2 in 2002. Emerson’s addition continues the Rays’ pattern of leveraging premium amateur talent to build a competitive, long-term roster.
As Emerson transitions from high school phenom to professional prospect, scouts will be watching how his advanced hitting approach translates to wood bats, how his athleticism translates to game speed and versatility in the field, and how his leadership and competitive demeanor translate from the diamond to a full-season minor league schedule. If his early performance and development trajectory hold, Emerson could become a cornerstone piece in the Rays’ ongoing effort to cultivate in-house talent and maintain a pipeline of impact players who can contribute at the MLB level in the coming years.
