It’s another huge win for the Tampa Bay Rays. The team beat the New York Yankees 5-2 in Game 2 of the American League Division Series on Monday night and now leads the best-of-five series 2-0. Here’s what you need to know from the contest. Peralta wins the pitching showdown. It was a great day for the September American League Pitcher of the Month, as well as the rest of the Tampa Bay pitching staff, on Monday, as they held the Yankees to only four hits across the entire contest. Three of those hits came from Peralta, who allowed only one earned run across 4.2 innings pitched, striking out three Yankees batters in the process. The only damage done by the Yankees from both Peralta and the rest of the bullpen was on solo home runs from Ben Rice, who connected on one against both Peralta and Ian Seymour, but it wasn’t enough to get the victory. Ian Seymour went three innings before handing it off to Bryan Baker, who picked up his second save of the postseason in back-to-back ALDS games. Rays made everything and anything work. Tampa Bay showed off their small-ball approach and took complete advantage of the Yankees’ defensive flaws in the victory on Monday night. Yankees ace and easily the American League Cy Young frontrunner, Cam Schlittler, did not have his best game on the mound, as he was chased from the game after only five innings.Schlittler allowed 6 hits and 2 earned runs across 4.1 innings of work and only struck out 2 Rays batters after sitting down 10 in his start last week in the American League Wild Card round against the Red Sox. Richie Palacios sealed the deal for Tampa Bay in the bottom of the fifth inning when he connected on a base hit to center field, allowing both Chandler Simpson and Jonny Deluca to score on a two-RBI single. Start spreading the news?Tampa Bay will now leave Tropicana Field with a 2-0 series lead and a chance to sweep the New York Yankees at their home stadium on Wednesday night. If they do so, they’ll have an extended break of up to 4 days before the ALCS Game 1 begins on Monday. They will look to one of their All-Star pitchers to get the job done, with Nick Martinez set to start Game 3 for Kevin Cash in the Rays. Martinez also has starting pitchers like Griffin Jax behind him as potential security if they need to try to secure the sweep. First pitch on Wednesday from Yankee Stadium is scheduled for 8 pm Eastern.
