Real Madrid considering surprise move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder

As the summer approached, Real Madrid were expected to pursue a new central midfielder to finally replace Toni Kroos, who had retired from football two years earlier. Yet recent weeks have brought complications, largely because Enzo Fernandez—who is head coach Jose Mourinho’s top target—has proved financially out of reach for a move to the Bernabeu. This development has pushed the club to change course. Although signing a new midfielder no longer holds the same urgency as before, Real Madrid’s scouting department has not paused their market activity and has continued to identify potential targets, with the latest dialog centering on a player from Paris Saint-Germain.
According to French media (via Marca), Real Madrid have expressed interest in Fabian Ruiz. The 30-year-old Spain international, who is currently with his national team at the 2026 World Cup, has long been on the radar of Bernabeu officials. However, his fragile contract situation has elevated his status as a serious target. Ruiz has less than a year remaining on his PSG deal, and although negotiations have been ongoing regarding a potential two-year extension, no agreement has been reached yet. This situation has sparked renewed speculation about his future in Paris, and Real Madrid have joined a growing list of suitors that also includes Galatasaray and Juventus.
The reports suggest that PSG would consider selling Ruiz this summer if he does not renew his contract, but only if they receive an offer in the region of €40-50 million. For a first-team midfielder, that figure represents a favorable price, and it is far below the €140 million Chelsea reportedly sought to push Fernandez to Madrid. Nevertheless, Ruiz’s profile may not perfectly align with Real Madrid’s current needs. The club is seeking a true ball-winner and controller—someone who can replicate Kroos’s role and influence in midfield. Given this, Real Madrid may decide that Ruiz, while a valuable option, is not the ideal fit for their tactical blueprint, and it might be wiser to allocate resources toward a player who better matches the characteristics of Kroos’s successor.
In the broader context of the squad’s plans, Madrid’s approach to midfield reinforcement remains nuanced. The pursuit of a long-term, established operator who can impose control in midfield continues to be a priority for the strategy moving forward. Yet the financial realities, coupled with the evolving list of potential targets, mean Madrid could explore alternative routes, including developing internal options or targeting other profiles who can deliver the required balance between defensive rigor and progressive distribution.
As the transfer window evolves, Real Madrid’s decision will hinge on a combination of contract dynamics at PSG, the availability of feasible alternatives, and the club’s assessment of how Ruiz’s style would integrate within their system. If PSG’s stance hardens or if Madrid identify a more suitable midfield director, they may pivot away from Ruiz. Conversely, if the price remains attractive and the player’s willingness to relocate aligns with the club’s direction, Fabian Ruiz could become a strategic addition, providing experience and composure in the center of the pitch while offering a flexible option across different midfield roles.
