Real Madrid defender set to join La Liga rivals in €4 million move on a four-year contract

Real Madrid has reached an agreement to sell left-back Fran Garcia to La Liga rival Real Betis in a deal valued at €4 million for 50% of the player’s future economic rights, according to El Chiringuito TV. By preserving half of Garcia’s economic rights, Real Madrid will receive a share of any future transfer fee should Betis decide to move him on at a later date. The report also notes that Garcia has completed his personal terms with Betis, signing a four-year contract that binds him to the Estadio Benito Villamarín through June 2030. The deal moved quickly after Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini earmarked the energetic full-back as a priority addition to strengthen the right side of his defense.
Garcia’s route to Betis presents a crucial chance for him to secure regular first-team football after slipping behind competition at the Bernabeu, where he sat behind players such as Alvaro Carreras, Ferland Mendy, and, more recently, Marc Cucurella, who joined from Chelsea in the latest transfer window. The Real Madrid academy graduate initially rejoined the club from Rayo Vallecano in the summer of 2023 when Madrid exercised a €5 million buyback clause.
Spanish reports indicate that Garcia’s move to Betis could be finalized as early as today, with the defender anticipated to sign his contract and undergo his medical in the coming hours. The €4 million deal represents a notable strategic move for Real Madrid, fueling what is described as an unprecedented summer financial masterclass for the club. Madrid has already generated more than €100 million in this transfer window by leveraging academy graduates and peripheral squad assets, including significant windfalls from Nico Paz’s move to Como and Mario Gila’s transfer to AC Milan.
Having invested over €50 million this summer to acquire Cucurella and with Jose Mourinho’s confidence in Alvaro Carreras, there was limited space for Garcia in the Real Madrid lineup. A transfer to Betis, where he can feature regularly, should be a positive development for the player, while Real Madrid secures immediate revenue from a player in the final year of his contract and maintains some leverage over his future. This move aligns with Betis’ ongoing strategy to bolster their squad depth and reinforce the defensive flanks, which Pellegrini has identified as a priority as the club seeks to compete at the highest levels in La Liga and in European competition in the coming seasons.
