Real Madrid have long operated under the assumption that their home ground, the Santiago Bernabeu, would be the natural venue for the 2030 World Cup final, despite competition from Barcelona’s Spotify Camp Nou. Yet the Bernabeu’s status as the clear favorite to stage football’s showpiece event is now being questioned, as Morocco gathers momentum in the bid race.
According to The Objective (via Bernabeu Digital), Morocco is currently regarded as the frontrunner to host the final. The report suggests the North African nation has substantial backing for its bid, which could jeopardize the Bernabeu’s traditional primacy in this decision. The 2030 World Cup is planned to be hosted primarily by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay responsible for opening matches to mark the centenary of the inaugural tournament. Spain has prepared nine stadiums for the competition, compared with six in Morocco and three in Portugal.
The Santiago Bernabeu remains a candidate for the 2030 final. In that context, the recently renovated Bernabeu had been widely perceived as a natural choice to stage the final, given Spain’s central role in the tournament. However, Morocco’s preparations include the Hassan II Stadium, which is being developed to accommodate around 115,000 spectators. Such a capacity would offer a clear attendance advantage over the Bernabeu, which seats roughly 85,000. The report also claims that Morocco enjoys support from FIFA President Gianni Infantino, as well as from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, further increasing concerns that the final could eventually be awarded to Morocco rather than Madrid.
Notably, Morocco’s bid did not form part of the initial plan to host World Cup matches in 2030. The African nation joined the Iberian bid after the outbreak of conflict in Ukraine prevented some venues from being used in its own bid. From Real Madrid’s viewpoint, losing the final would be a significant disappointment. The club’s stadium has undergone a substantial transformation to become one of football’s most modern and recognizable venues, and hosting the World Cup final would further elevate its global standing.
Importantly, nothing has been decided yet. While capacity is a critical factor, it should not be the sole consideration when determining the venue for football’s greatest match. The contest to host the 2030 final appears to be increasingly competitive. Madrid will be hoping that the Bernabeu’s prestige, history, and experience in staging major finals can ultimately outweigh Hassan II’s larger capacity. As the process unfolds, all eyes will be on FIFA’s eventual decision to determine the host nation and venue for the 2030 World Cup final.
