Recapping Brandon Aiyuk’s activity over the last few days

Brandon Aiyuk has been in the spotlight this week, busy with all the hallmarks of Brandon Aiyuk behavior. The soon-to-be-former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver stopped following the quarterback he once wanted to team up with, offered explanations, and declared that social media isn’t going to slow down for him anytime soon. Let’s break down what’s happened.
To understand Aiyuk’s current situation, we have to rewind about a week. Last Saturday, Aiyuk zeroed in on Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. For a while, there was speculation that Aiyuk hoped to reunite with Daniels for the 2026 season. But the landscape has shifted dramatically since then. It all kicked off with a viral video in which a 49ers fan told Daniels not to target Aiyuk next year. Daniels’s reaction—laughter—was noticeable, and Aiyuk didn’t take it well, firing off expletives toward Daniels and unfollowing him soon after. Not long after, Aiyuk uploaded another clip that included Daniels’ handle in the frame, and predictably Daniels also unfollowed Aiyuk. The tension didn’t end there either; Aiyuk posted a further video directed at Daniels, adding fuel to the flame.
Does this mean Aiyuk doesn’t want to go to the Commanders? Not necessarily. He then posted a cryptic message suggesting a desire to play for the Commanders, which could indicate a wish to keep options open for 2026. Perhaps he and Daniels have already reconciled, or perhaps Aiyuk simply doesn’t care who throws him the ball as long as the path to Washington stays open.
This week, Aiyuk tried to explain his actions and his thought process. The most striking aspect is his refusal to report to the 49ers to be reinstated, citing a stance of not “doing business.” Of course, to be reinstated, he would need to report to the 49ers, which he has thus far resisted as the path of least resistance. If his primary motive is to avoid returning to the 49ers, then the Washington Commanders feud—real or perceived—might be secondary. In that scenario, Aiyuk could find himself out of football for the 2026 season, two years after tearing his knee.
Aiyuk also posted a video explaining the social media posts, saying, “I gotta get paid somehow. The employer [the 49ers] is holding me captive without pay. At least social media is paying.” The comment drew strong reactions from within the sport’s circle, including Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young, who told the New York Post, “I worry for him. I feel like I want to reach out and help. This is beyond football; it feels like.”
Will there be an end to this saga? If recent history is any guide, probably not in the near future. And even if Aiyuk does return to the NFL, he has signaled that he won’t walk away from social media. For 49ers fans, there’s good news on the horizon: training camp is approaching, promising a more concrete picture of where Aiyuk fits and what his 2026 plans might be.
