Seven months after firing a half-dozen coaches, the Red Sox are again making changes to their major league coaching staff.Multiple industry sources say interim third base coach Chad Epperson and interim first base coach Pablo Cabrera will not return to their 2026 roles.Epperson will instead manage the team’s Triple A affiliate in Worcester. Cabrera, meanwhile, will return to his previous role as the organization’s minor league defensive coordinator. When the Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora last April in Baltimore following a 10-17 start, they also dismissed six members of his coaching staff, including third base coach Kyle Hudson, hitting instructor Pete Fatse and game-planning coordinator Jason Varitek. Additionally, first base coach Jose David Flores was shifted from first base coach to bench coach, replacing the fired Ramon Vazquez. Also let go were hitting assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson and major league hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin. As the Red Sox scrambled to find replacements, those positions were then filled internally by others in the organization, including Epperson, who had been managing the team’s Double A affiliate in Portland. After Chad Tracy was promoted from managing in Worcester to replace Cora in the Red Sox dugout, he was replaced by Iggy Suarez. Suarez will be Worcester’s bench coach under Epperson, multiple sources said Wednesday. As Boston’s third base coach, Epperson drew criticism for having a number of players thrown out at the plate. At the time, the Red Sox were struggling to score runs and his aggressive style was perhaps in response to the team’s inability to score.Cabrera, 29, was one of the youngest coaches on the new staff. It’s not known if any other changes are planned to the coaching staff or who will replace Epperson and Cabrera. At this time, the Red Sox do not have anyone lined up for the base coach positions.More Red Sox coverageRed Sox sign first free agent of winter, inking ex-Nationals catcher to minor league dealFenway Insider Live: Sean McAdam on Jarren Duran, potential 2027 lockout and moreHow ex-Red Sox players in World Series for Rays, Brewers are doing this seasonRed Sox roster: After Adley Rutschman trade, is catcher still a need this winter?Red Sox roster decisions with prospects coming; reliever suffered stress fractureRead the original article on MassLive.
