The Boston Red Sox are riding a strong run on the field, but the front office continues to make moves they believe will benefit the team in the long run. Ahead of today’s game, Boston announced a change to its pitching staff: left-hander Danny Coulombe has been designated for assignment, per a report from Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. The 36-year-old pitcher posted a 4.50 ERA across 22 innings for the Red Sox this season. “He doesn’t have overwhelming stuff, but he’s delivered a sub-3.00 ERA in each of the past four years. He heads to DFA limbo with a solid chance to find another home,” noted Charlie Wright of MLB Trade Rumors. Wright also explained that Boston has five days to explore a trade or place Coulombe on waivers. If he clears waivers, Coulombe would have enough service time to forego a minor league assignment and elect free agency.
Coulombe’s stint with the Red Sox marked his sixth organization across 12 Major League seasons. In related news, Cotillo reported that Boston promoted right-hander Bryan Bello from Triple-A to fill Coulombe’s roster spot, with Bello rejoining the major league bullpen for his return to the majors. Bello had been pitching at Worcester, where his four starts produced a 4.34 ERA, along with 22 strikeouts and just four walks over 18.2 innings.
This roster maneuver comes amid broader trade speculations and discussions around various teams and players in the league, but for now the Red Sox are reshuffling their bullpen to keep headlines steady as they chase continued success on the field.
