Less than 24 hours later, they lost another one.Boston placed first baseman Willson Contreras on the 10-day injured list Monday with a left hamstring strain. The Red Sox recalled catcher and first baseman Mickey Gasper from Triple-A Worcester to replace him on the active roster.The move comes at an especially difficult time for Boston. Contreras has been one of the most reliable hitters in the lineup throughout his first season with the Red Sox, batting .280 with a .912 OPS, 23 home runs and 70 RBIs. Now, interim manager Chad Tracy must reshape his lineup immediately after the Red Sox suffered an embarrassing 16-1 loss to the New York Yankees. Boston also lost the season series to New York, handing the Yankees a potentially important tiebreaker in the playoff race.The severity of Contreras’ hamstring injury and a potential timeline beyond the mandatory 10-day absence were not immediately disclosed.Mickey Gasper Returns One Day After Roster DemotionGasper’s latest roster transaction might have given him whiplash. The Red Sox optioned the 30-year-old to Worcester on Sunday while activating Roman Anthony and Trevor Story from the injured list. Gasper entered Monday batting .270 with three home runs, 17 RBIs and a .770 OPS over 41 major league games. He also carried a 1.017 OPS through 54 games with Worcester. Gasper recently made a convincing case to remain in the majors by reaching base in 12 of his final 16 plate appearances on Boston’s road trip. That stretch included two home runs, a double, two singles and seven walks.His defensive versatility also makes him the logical replacement. Gasper can play first base, catch or serve as the designated hitter, giving Tracy several ways to cover the absence of Contreras.
