PHILADELPHIA — The Red Sox made a minor trade to add some outfield depth to their roster Tuesday.Boston agreed to acquire outfielder Jahmai Jones from the Tigers for a player to be named later, the team announced. As a player who is out of minor league options, he was added to the major league roster and will be active Friday when play resumes with a doubleheader against Tampa Bay.. The Red Sox sent Nate Eaton down to Triple-A to clear a roster spot.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementJones, who turns 29 in a few weeks, is a former Angels top prospect who was drafted in the second round back in 2015. The Georgia native has appeared in 198 MLB games over six years with the Angels, Orioles, Brewers, Yankees and Tigers and experienced something of a breakout last year before a dismal offensive start to 2026. In 72 games with the Tigers in 2025, Jones hit .287 with seven homers, 11 doubles and a .937 OPS. This year, he has played 57 games (23 starts) and has hit .137 with two homers, a .440 OPS and 35 strikeouts.Jones is a right-handed hitter with a career .742 OPS against left-handed pitchers in the big leagues, so the Red Sox will be adding a platoon option with experience in extensive experience in both corner outfield positions. He has mostly been a designated hitter for the Tigers this year and has also played second base (and a handful of innings at third) in the past.BETTING: The Red Sox are sitting at +1800 over on DraftKings to win the AL Pennant this year. While Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela are playing on an everyday basis, Jarren Duran — hitting .152 with 47 strikeouts and a .460 OPS in his last 34 games — has been playing less against left-handed pitching.Eaton, who is 4-for-32 (.125) with two doubles and a homer in 14 big league games this season, has started six of Boston’s last eight games against lefties as the left-fielder (and one more in right field). Duran has sat four of those times.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementBoston had an open 40-man roster spot for Jones because veteran lefty Danny Coulombe was designated for assignment over the weekend. The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier was first to report the trade.Read the original article on MassLive. Add MassLive as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
