During Saturday’s 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees at Fenway Park, Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran was involved in a verbal exchange with a fan. The incident happened in the eighth inning after Duran grounded out to first base, finishing 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Earlier, he broke his bat by slamming it on the on-deck circle after another strikeout in the third inning. As he walked toward the dugout, Duran and a spectator began trading remarks. Teammates alerted security, and a fan was eventually removed from the game. When asked about the incident, Duran spoke to reporters for less than 30 seconds, repeatedly saying, “Nothing happened.”
Because there was no NESN postgame show with a national broadcast, the full 27-second exchange with Duran after the game was shared publicly. Red Sox manager Chad Tracy offered a bit more context, noting that there were fans “chirping” for several innings and that the team asked security to remove them after the taunting continued. Tracy declined to specify what was said, only confirming that there was enough for the team to request their removal.
Duran’s 0-for-4 dropped his season batting line to .198/.255/.360, though he has 12 home runs and 38 RBIs, the second-most on the team. This incident marks at least the third time Duran has clashed with fans. In 2022 at Cleveland’s Progressive Field, he exchanged words with a spectator and had to be restrained by coaches; he later revealed that the comments related to his mental health and a suicide attempt, which he discussed in a 2025 Netflix docuseries, The Clubhouse: A Year With the Red Sox. In 2024 at Fenway, he directed an anti-gay slur at a heckler, for which he apologized and the team suspended him for two games.
