CHICAGO — Boston Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton has had his initial three-game suspension for actions during a dugout-clearing altercation with the Washington Nationals reduced to two games. The Red Sox announced the lighter penalty, and Eaton is set to begin serving the suspension in the first game of Boston’s three-game series against the Chicago White Sox in the Windy City.
The disciplinary action stems from an incident in Boston on June 30 that sparked the dugout confrontation and led to ejections for Eaton and Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas. The flare-up followed Willson Contreras’s dispute with comments made by pitcher Cade Cavalli; Contreras charged the mound and threw his helmet in the exchange. Both Cavalli and Contreras initially faced seven-game suspensions, and Eaton and Mikolas were each handed five-game suspensions. All four appealed their penalties, though Cavalli and Contreras ultimately did not serve the full suspensions as they sought reductions, and Eaton accepted an additional reduction of two games rather than the originally proposed three.
Cavalli accepted a reduced suspension of five games, while Eaton elected to accept a one-game reduction from the original suspension, reducing his penalty from three games to two. The appeals for Contreras and Mikolas were still pending at the time of the announcement, and Contreras was in the White Sox series lineup after learning he had been selected as an All-Star replacement for Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Nate Eaton, a 29-year-old outfielder who has appeared in 12 games for Boston this season, has spent a portion of his time with the club filling in for Jarren Duran against left-handed pitching. In limited action this year, Eaton has posted a .143 batting average with one home run, two doubles, and two stolen bases across his appearances.
As Eaton begins serving his two-game suspension, the Red Sox will navigate the series against Chicago without him for the initial portion of the set. The ongoing appeals involving Contreras and Mikolas add another layer of anticipation to the situation, with all sides awaiting final word on those disciplinary reviews. For Boston, the immediate focus remains on performance and roster depth as the team continues its push within the league standings.
