The disciplinary action stems from an incident in Boston on June 30 that sparked the dugout confrontation and led to ejections for Eaton and Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas. The flare-up followed Willson Contreras’s dispute with comments made by pitcher Cade Cavalli; Contreras charged the mound and threw his helmet in the exchange. Both Cavalli and Contreras initially faced seven-game suspensions, and Eaton and Mikolas were each handed five-game suspensions. All four appealed their penalties, though Cavalli and Contreras ultimately did not serve the full suspensions as they sought reductions, and Eaton accepted an additional reduction of two games rather than the originally proposed three.
Cavalli accepted a reduced suspension of five games, while Eaton elected to accept a one-game reduction from the original suspension, reducing his penalty from three games to two. The appeals for Contreras and Mikolas were still pending at the time of the announcement, and Contreras was in the White Sox series lineup after learning he had been selected as an All-Star replacement for Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Nate Eaton, a 29-year-old outfielder who has appeared in 12 games for Boston this season, has spent a portion of his time with the club filling in for Jarren Duran against left-handed pitching. In limited action this year, Eaton has posted a .143 batting average with one home run, two doubles, and two stolen bases across his appearances.
