​ARLINGTON, Texas — Instant reactions to the Red Sox (82-70) surrendering an early lead and losing to the Rangers for the second straight night, this time by a 7-3 score: 1) A back-and-forth game turned in Texas’ direction when usually-steady reliever Erik Miller let things slip away in a three-run seventh. The Rangers turned a 3-3 tie into a 6-3 lead with a parade of baserunners (thanks to Miller’s spotty command) and some timely hitting and the Red Sox dropped their second straight.Miller entered with a 1.20 ERA while allowing just nine hits in 15 innings since the Red Sox acquired him at the trade deadline, but he had allowed runs in two of his last five outings. Wednesday brought his worst outing of the year, including his four months with San Francisco.Two free passes — Miller hit Corey Seager with a pitch and walked Jake Burger — set things up for Brandon Nimmo to win a left-on-left battle and hit a go-ahead RBI double. Two batters later, with two men in scoring position and two outs, Ezequiel Duran ripped a two-run single into left to make it 6-3. Miller’s efforts weren’t helped by a wayward throw home by Roman Anthony.Texas added an insurance run on Seager’s RBI single off Raymond Burgos in the eighth.2)The Red Sox came to Texas with their postseason magic number sitting at five and it’s still there, two-thirds of the way through a three-game series. The Rangers remained the first team out of the wild card picture on a night Texas and Toronto both won. The Red Sox have a 6 ½ game lead over the Rangers and still sit five games ahead of the White Sox, who are now third in the wild card race.The loss did eliminate the Red Sox from the AL East race as Tampa Bay’s lead over Boston ballooned to 11 games.3) Boston’s offense had just three hits, in large part due to a unique plan of attack for Texas’ Skip Schumaker. With the Rangers needing wins to stay in the postseason race, they used starter MacKenzie Gore for four-plus innings, then after a bridge inning from Jakob Junis, turned to Nathan Eovaldi for a four-inning relief outing as part of his buildup after missing time due to elbow inflammation.Eovaldi, the ex-Red Sox righty, was very effective. He allowed just one hit and needed only 46 pitches to pitch four scoreless innings to end the game.4) An uneven, gritty outing from Jake Bennett resulted in a no decision and fell short of the five-inning mark, but he did well to limit the damage on a night when the Rangers hit him around a bit. In all, Bennett lasted 4 ⅔ innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out seven batters.Pitching with a 2-0 lead before taking the mound, Bennett almost handed it back instantly when he allowed three hits (including two doubles) to the first four batters he faced, but limited Texas to one run.
