The Red Sox (42-48) will attempt to close out a three-game sweep of the White Sox (47-44) this afternoon at Rate Field in Chicago. Boston has won five straight, while Chicago has dropped four of its last six. The Red Sox extended their hot stretch with a dominant 5-0 win last night. They broke through against White Sox starter Davis Martin with three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth, then let left-hander Jake Bennett seal the victory with seven scoreless innings, permitting four hits while punching out four. Tsung-Che Cheng fueled the offense with two hits and two RBIs, and Ceddanne Rafaela added an RBI double. Chicago managed only four hits in the game and has scored just a single run in the first two games of the series.
Despite the loss, Chicago still sits atop the AL Central by a one-game edge over Cleveland. The White Sox’ Wild Card push continues as they beat Boston last night, while the Red Sox sit three games back of a playoff spot.
Patrick Sandoval will take the mound for Boston today, making his debut with the club after Tommy John surgery and a series of setbacks. He has not appeared in a major league game since June 2024. His last appearance came on a rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on July 4, when he delivered five scoreless innings, allowed just one hit and one walk, struck out seven, and threw 68 pitches. Boston plans to monitor his workload closely this afternoon.
Chicago counters with veteran left-hander Anthony Kay (6-3, 4.29 ERA). Kay’s most recent start came July 3 against Cleveland, when he was effective in a tough-luck extra-inning loss, yielding one run on one hit across four innings while issuing two walks and two strikeouts. Prior to that outing, he had struggled against Kansas City on June 28, giving up five runs (three earned) over 3.2 innings, though he had delivered six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts against Cleveland in the start before that.
