​A town is once again hosting the northern trials for the England men’s squad ahead of the next Homeless World Cup. In May 2025, Middlesbrough conducted successful trials, with more than 100 players taking part; two of those individuals were selected to compete in the main event in Norway the following summer. Team manager Craig McManus said the trials are building on the momentum generated by last year’s success and expressed a desire for Middlesbrough to become the “epicentre of change” for homelessness in the northern region. The upcoming trials are scheduled for 3 September at Middlesbrough Football Foundation’s Southlands facility. McManus emphasized that the tournament should act as a catalyst for changing perceptions of homelessness, stating that it offers an opportunity for players to represent their country and that this event will build on the foundations laid by last year’s Trials.
Last year’s Middlesbrough trials marked the first time the event was held outside London, drawing players from Liverpool, Newcastle, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Sunderland, Stockton, and Middlesbrough. The 21st Homeless World Cup is set to take place in Mexico City from 17 to 23 January 2027.
