Report: Newcastle United want to sign Serie A midfielder after collapsed deal

Newcastle United are weighing a move for Atalanta’s Ederson after Manchester United unexpectedly pulled out of a proposed deal, according to Sports View. The twist has quickly rekindled Ederson’s prominence as Newcastle look to reshape the core of their midfield, bringing in a player who could add immediate impact.
Manchester United had reportedly reached an in-principle agreement to sign Ederson in June, but the plan changed after the Brazil international fulfilled his duties with the national team. Following late call-ups and completion of international obligations, United initiated a second round of medical checks on the midfielder. What happened next was abrupt: United reportedly withdrew from the deal, informing Atalanta of their decision.
That sequence has opened a door for Newcastle, who are actively seeking high-calibre midfield reinforcements after the £100 million sale of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur. With Bruno Guimarães’s future still shrouded in uncertainty amid ongoing links to Arsenal, the need for fresh quality in the engine room is clear. Ederson fits that profile, especially given Newcastle’s evident confidence in his fitness.
A central point in this developing story is that Newcastle’s recruitment team does not share Manchester United’s reservations about signing Ederson. United reportedly reconsidered because of a minor knee concern, while Atalanta remain steadfast in their position. The Italian club insist the player is fully fit and are prepared to offer him new terms, with only 12 months left on his current deal.
There is no sign of panic in Bergamo. Maurizio Sarri is said to be content to keep Ederson involved if no agreement materialises, and Atalanta remain willing to sell at their stated valuation. For Newcastle, that creates a straightforward decision: act quickly to secure a player they clearly rate highly, or risk the situation shifting again as other clubs weigh their own options.
Newcastle have already recruited Sean Steur from Ajax, who is viewed as a future prospect rather than an immediate starter. The club also appears interested in Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi, suggesting a broader strategy to strengthen in the medium term. Yet Ederson would represent a distinct level entirely: an experienced, powerful option who could alter the midfield’s balance and feel at once.
For a club aimed at responding rapidly to major changes, this is a development worth watching closely. From a Newcastle supporter’s perspective, the report carries encouraging implications. Ederson seems precisely the type of midfielder the club should target if the aim is to remain competitive and refresh the squad with proven quality. The reassuring aspect for fans is that Newcastle’s recruitment team do not share Manchester United’s concerns about Ederson. If the medicals and overall recruitment assessment align, supporters can be hopeful. Of course, there remains an element of risk whenever a major club pulls out late, and scrutiny over any “minor” concerns will persist as the deal progresses or stalls.
