NBA insider Jake Fischer said the Pistons discussed Kevin Durant internally but disputed reports that a blockbuster three-team trade involving the Rockets and Celtics ever looked like a realistic scenario. The Detroit Pistons have reportedly remained active in their pursuit of Durant this offseason, exploring every avenue to potentially bring him from the Rockets. Durant, who will turn 38 in September, remains viewed as a valuable roster piece whether he’s a short-term impact player or part of a longer-term plan. It seems both the Pistons and Rockets share that assessment.
According to NBA insider Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the Pistons face a hurdle in their pursuit of the veteran superstar. “Kevin Durant is a name that the Detroit Pistons have been looking into,” Siegel said. “They contacted the Rockets earlier this offseason to gauge what it would take to trade for him. The Rockets aren’t interested in Durant at this moment, but the Pistons continue to monitor the situation to see if a path to acquire him may emerge, whether now, at the trade deadline, or perhaps next offseason.”
Durant joined the Rockets last summer as part of a seven-team deal, and the franchise hasn’t signaled they need to move him imminently. The team did endure another disappointing first-round exit in the playoffs, though Durant remains central to Houston’s hopes of remaining competitive this season and beyond. He played in 78 regular-season games, but an injury limited his impact in the postseason. The Rockets could still consider moving him, but any potential deal would likely require substantial compensation.
Houston acquired Durant last summer to provide a short-term upgrade rather than to secure a long-term cornerstone. His presence helps the Rockets pursue immediate contention, but injuries and age factor into how the franchise plans for the future. The team now faces the challenge of balancing the desire to contend now with the need for long-term flexibility and financial stewardship. Durant’s $90 million extension runs through 2027-28, after which a player option could complicate future planning for Houston. Given Durant’s age and the risk of diminished performance in coming seasons, the Rockets would need a compelling return to consider parting with him, even if the overarching desire to improve the club’s championship windows remains strong. The reality is that any durable plan for Durant will hinge on weighing immediate competitive advantages against long-term roster construction and financial leverage, making a blockbuster deal unlikely unless a rare alignment of teams, salaries, and timelines occurs.
