It was his first-ever mission with the Coast Guard.”There are a lot of heroes that aren’t getting ESPY Award,” he said Wednesday night. “It took a complete army of people to get this done.”The service award is named for former Arizona Cardinal Pat Tillman, who enlisted in the Army in spring 2002 after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He was killed in action by friendly fire in 2004.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementDuring his acceptance speech, Ruskan recognized the work of camp counselors who sprung to action in the middle of the night to move as many campers as possible before crews arrived on the scene. He also explained how helicopters and air support worked to rescue victims from the flood while Ruskan was on the ground working on a plan.”If the stage behind me was big enough and we had enough tickets, there would be 100 people standing behind me,” he said. But Ruskan’s trip to New York will be short because he will join first responders back in Texas to help the current flooding.”I’m going back there Friday, I will be back there,” he said.Sign up for the Daily Briefing from the Austin American-Statesman.
