Credit: ESPN’s Sunday NFL CountdownRex Ryan has been a fixture of the media for a decade now, having joined ESPN after he was fired by the Buffalo Bills following the 2016 season. While he’s a media veteran at this point, it appears that Ryan has not fully rid himself of the coaching bug. According to a story from Jeff Ermann at 24/7 Sports, Ryan is putting out feelers for the head coaching job that recently opened up at the University of Maryland after the Terps fired Mike Locksley amid a 12-game losing streak in Big Ten play.As reported earlier this week at InsideMDSports, Rex Ryan has been putting out feelers for the Maryland job.— Jeff Ermann (@Jeff_Ermann) October 29, 2026Ermann acknowledged that while Ryan feels like a long shot for the job given how far removed he is from his last coaching gig, that there are some that believe the union could work.Per Ermann:“Would get Deion-level buzz with actual coaching ability behind it. And he would constantly grab attention for the school in the same way Harbaugh did early at Michigan, which is real currency at Maryland,” a source said. “He loves Maryland from all his years with the Ravens and there’s a good chance his coaching staff would be star-studded. He’s a legitimate football genius. I know he comes across like a blowhard on TV, but he could be the best defensive coach in college football.”While “Deion-level buzz” might be a bit of a stretch, there is no arguing that the addition of Ryan would add more intrigue and interest to Maryland football than we’ve seen in quite some time. Ryan was always ready to give a good quote, and a decade working in media has likely only sharpened that particular tool.Whether or not Ryan could be successful at Maryland remains an extremely open question. Results for Colorado (especially post Shedeur Sanders) and the Bill Belichick era at North Carolina have been mixed so far at best, and while far from a one-to-one, those are somewhat comparable situations. Like Sanders and Belichick, Ryan would have an impressive rolodex to pull from when building out a staff, and at the very least could probably help kickstart a one-time bump in transfer portal funding with the excitement around his hire, though that may be true for whoever takes on the job.Other candidates for the Maryland job include former Notre Dame and LSU coach Brian Kelly, as well as New York Giants defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, who played his college ball with the Terps. The post Rex Ryan reportedly lobbying for Maryland coaching job appeared first on Awful Announcing.
