Rich Paul reveals LeBron James’ free agency finalists on whiteboard during podcast

The NBA is relying on The Decision 4.0 to reveal where LeBron James will play in the 2026-27 season. Though he’ll turn 42 in December, James remains a top-50 player in the world, and numerous contenders could use his impact. Reports have him weighing between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors for next season, but a leaked whiteboard from his agent Rich Paul suggests a broader field of realistic options. Paul discussed James’ free agency on the Game Over Podcast with Max Kellerman, saying, “outside of one organization, maybe two. I’ve heard from every team in the entire league.” So, which teams are realistically in the mix?
Paul unveiled a whiteboard listing LeBron’s “realistic” destinations (via Game Over Pod, @TheHeatCentral). The board shows the Philadelphia 76ers as a primary option, with a potential fit alongside Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, and Joel Embiid. The Miami Heat appear next, where he would pair with Davion Mitchell, Andrew Wiggins, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Bam Adebayo. The Cavaliers are included as well, envisioning a lineup with Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. The Denver Nuggets are also on the board, featuring Jamal Murray, Cam Johnson, Aaron Gordon, and Nikola Jokic. Notably, the Warriors are the one team without a written lineup, possibly because they’re pursuing Anthony Davis as well. Other teams on the board include the Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, and New York Knicks. Paul even commented on the Knicks, saying, “If the Knick hadn’t won, there would be no board. He’d be going to the Knicks.”
Even with the Warriors seemingly in the mix, they appear to be the current frontrunner. Golden State’s strategy began when Draymond Green opted out of his player option, and Green’s agent is Paul. It seems LeBron would relish teaming up with Stephen Curry, but the pursuit of Davis could complicate matters. Washington’s Wizards have gained leverage after a deadline trade for Davis, potentially pressuring Golden State for future assets or prompting LeBron to reassess if the roster can truly contend without Davis. LeBron has suggested that happiness, not money, will drive his choice, implying that a broader range of teams could realistically pursue him even without cap space. As Windhorst noted on ESPN, “LeBron’s No. 1 priority for this season is happiness. … It’s not gonna be necessarily who’s got the most money to offer.”
