Richard Hughes could land the bargain of the summer for Liverpool if they sign ‘intelligent’ sensation

Liverpool will need to secure a number of bargains if they want to strengthen their squad this summer. The Anfield club have a substantial amount of work to do, and without clinching enough deals, they risk steering the season into a troubling direction. In fact, there’s a real possibility they could finish lower than fifth, which would be a travesty for a club that lifted the Premier League title just two years ago.
Victor Muñoz and Jeremy Jacquet have already been brought in, and while Jacquet didn’t look like a major bargain in January, given how inflated the market is right now, signing the Frenchman for £55 million could prove prudent business. Even with these two additions, Liverpool still need at least three or four more players before they can realistically challenge for silverware again. With so many recruitment targets, the club will have to stretch their resources carefully, spending as little as possible on new recruits so funds can be distributed more evenly. Signing a player who offers value for money could achieve exactly that.
Arnau Martinez would be a compelling addition for Liverpool. The club’s defence is a primary area needing an upgrade. Ibrahima Konaté and Andy Robertson have both departed in the wake of new signings, and with Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni having never played in the Premier League, the depth behind Virgil van Dijk looks rather thin. Of course, Van Dijk remains a key figure, but there are limits to how much one player can carry. The fact that Arnau Martinez’s name hasn’t yet surfaced as a potential target is surprising. The 23-year-old defender can operate as a right-back or centre-back and brings a wealth of La Liga experience.
Martinez has an €8 million release clause, which in today’s market is a remarkably affordable figure—comparable to the kind of compensation clubs often pay for managerial changes. A La Liga-proven defender available for this price seems almost absurd, and for Liverpool fans who may not be familiar with the player, the rationale behind pursuing him becomes clear. On the surface, it’s a move that makes considerable sense: Liverpool need fresh faces, and Martinez would provide immediate quality and versatility.
The 2024-25 season ended with Liverpool lifting the title, but it felt as though Arne Slot’s influence delivered the victory more than Klopp’s side had the opportunity to recover, even though the club spent over £450 million on new signings that campaign. Under Iraola, there is hope that the culture at the club could resemble the Klopp era again. However, if Liverpool fail to move swiftly on their transfer targets, the project could stall. The time to act is now, and the focus should be on smart, value-driven acquisitions that can reinforce the squad without draining finances.
