Roberto Martínez is set to depart from his role as Portugal’s manager just over three years after taking charge, following the national team’s exit from the FIFA World Cup in the Round of 16. The 52-year-old Spaniard announced his decision after Portugal fell 1-0 to Spain in Arlington, Texas, with Mikel Merino scoring the 91st-minute winner. After what marked Cristiano Ronaldo’s last World Cup appearance, Martínez told Reuters that he had come to Portugal with the aim of winning the World Cup, and that there would be little point in continuing without achieving that goal. He added that the board and the president now have the opportunity to appoint a new manager, and that his contract ends today.
Martínez, who previously managed Belgium, noted that while his future had been undecided before the tournament, he now believes his time with Portugal has ended. He called it his last game for the national team and said he was very proud to have felt welcomed as part of the Portuguese community, describing the experience as a source of pride and responsibility. Regarding Ronaldo, Martínez spoke warmly of the 41-year-old captain, praising his daily commitment and leadership beyond his goal tally, and emphasizing that Ronaldo serves as an exemplary figure to celebrate.
Ronaldo, who also spoke after the match, said he would leave North America with a clear conscience, expressing sadness at how the World Cup ended for him and stating that he gave his all. He acknowledged that it would be his last World Cup but suggested there would be time to reflect and spend with family.
Reflecting on Portugal’s performance against a highly challenging Spanish side, Martínez said Portugal showed courage in defense, played aggressively, and defended well, but in the World Cup Round of 16, the smallest details often determine the outcome.
