Headed into a new season, the Penn State Nittany Lions have a new mindset: focusing on getting back to a certain standard of success. Lingering thoughts about former head coach James Franklin are there, and it has started to seep through to the transfers. While Penn Stat has added 39 new players through the transfer portal, several returners have voiced their mixed opinions about Franklin. Now, the most prominent transfer has spoken out.Quarterback Rocco Becht certainly has no vendetta against James Franklin, but he has been around several of his former players long enough to understand their anger towards last season. As someone who was brought in to improve the outlook of the team, Becht is someone who will be relied upon to represent the new look squad. As a result, his opinions will matter. And from what he has said about Penn State’s history under Franklin, there are no holds barred when it comes to his own thoughts.”[Penn State] had a mindset going up against an FCS school, and they had a different mindset going up against a top team in the country,” Becht said. “So right now, what coach Campbell and myself are trying to instill into players is having that same mentality, game in and game out, and acting like you’re playing a top-tier program every week,” Becht said. While not a direct shot at Franklin, it is clear that Becht, Campbell and several other transfers don’t want to fall into the trap of last season. Therefore, it is up to the new QB to ensure that the new era of Penn State football gets off on the right foot.
