Roma’s Summerville Pursuit Enters a Decisive Week

With the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina set for Sunday, the footballing world will soon turn its attention back to club football: training camps, summer friendlies, and, of course, transfer rumors. As we discussed yesterday, free from the World Cup onslaught, the Romaverse is narrowing its focus to a few key players, the most intriguing of which may be West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville. The back of Summerville’s Panini card may be light on counting stats (only 10 goals and 5 assists in 84 Premier League appearances), but the 24-year-old Dutch winger has nevertheless caught Roma’s attention. As an inverted winger who excels in tight spaces and delights in taking on defenders, Summerville is practically die-cast in the Gasperini mold.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWhile adding him to the mix with Donyell Malen and Paulo Dybala, among others, could finally unlock his massive potential, this potential transfer remains a calculated gamble. Still, according to Sky Sport, Roma are willing to roll the dice and are prepping a €45 million offer for Summerville.Despite those good intentions, Roma still has to convince Summerville before submitting a formal offer to West Ham. However, rather than dragging this saga on all summer, Roma has reportedly set a July 21st make or break deadline for Summerville. In most cases, those ultimatums don’t hold water, but it is nice to see Roma establishing some boundaries.
