Russell returns for Scotland in South Africa

Star fly-half Finn Russell is cleared to start for Scotland against South Africa in the second round of Nations Championship action, stepping in for Tom Jordan at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Saturday after missing last weekend’s 47-38 victory in Argentina due to a calf problem. In addition to Russell’s return, there are two further changes to the starting lineup as tighthead prop Zander Fagerson and lock Gregor Brown are promoted to the run-on team, having come off the bench in Cordoba. They replace the injured Elliot Millar Mills and Jonny Gray. Will Hurd, Josh Bayliss, Magnus Bradbury, and Stafford McDowall are added to the bench, while winger Darcy Graham is left out as Scotland prepare for their first visit to South Africa since 2014. The replacements also include hooker Gregor Hiddleston, who scored a try on his debut against Argentina, and prop Rory Sutherland, who is set to win his 50th cap.
South Africa opened their campaign with a commanding 45-21 win over England in Johannesburg. The world champions have made 10 changes, resting captain Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, Cheslin Kolbe, and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. Scotland, meanwhile, have never beaten South Africa on their soil, and head coach Gregor Townsend has described the altitude test as the “ultimate challenge.” He views it as an opportunity to gauge Scotland’s progress and measure themselves against the best sides in the world. Townsend also highlighted that Russell will reach his 95th cap for Scotland, noting that the number 10 has been in full training since the middle of last week.
“We want to gain learnings from this game with our best available team,” Townsend said. “We know the bench will play a big part. It was pleasing to see Tom Jordan provide 60 minutes last week, and it’s encouraging that we have players who can significantly contribute in the second half because we will need them.” Russell’s experience is central to Scotland’s plans, and Townsend emphasized that the squad is prepared to deliver a strong performance in a high-altitude environment.
Scottish intrigue surrounds the balance of continuity and fresh impetus as Townsend names Rowe, Steyn, Hutchinson, Tuipulotu (captain), Dobie, Russell, and White in the backline, with Schoeman, Ashman, Z Fagerson, Brown, Cummings, M Fagerson, Darge, and Dempsey up front. The bench features Hiddleston, Sutherland, Hurd, Samuel, Bayliss, Bradbury, Jordan, and McDowall, reflecting a blend of veteran and emerging talents designed to adapt to a challenging away environment.
As Scotland prepare to tackle the Springboks on their home turf, all eyes will be on Russell’s leadership and execution at fly-half, as well as the collective effort across forwards and backs to withstand the physically imposing South African setup. This match represents a pivotal moment for Townsend’s side as they seek to break their winless run in South Africa and demonstrate their capacity to perform at a high level away from home. The stakes are high, but Scotland are determined to rise to the occasion, test their systems, and gain valuable insights from competing against one of rugby’s strongest nations in a demanding climate. The stage is set for a compelling showdown as Scotland look to mark a significant step forward in their Nations Championship campaign.
