Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025.(SCOTT CLAUSE / USATODAY Network)RUSTON — One of Ruston High School’s most famous graduates will soon have his jersey retired by LSU football.The Tigers announced Wednesday, July 15 on its X (formerly Twitter) account that Bert Jones, the first All-American quarterback in program history and a College Football Hall of Famer, will have his No. 7 jersey retired when the team hosts Texas on Nov. 14.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementLHSAA football: Ruston faces fellow powerhouse Edna Karr in New OrleansJones helped LSU to a 27-8-1 record over his three seasons, including a 12-3-1 mark in Southeastern Conference play, and earned All-American honors in 1972 following a 1,446-yard, 14-touchdown campaign. The 74-year-old was drafted second overall by the Baltimore Colts in 1973 and threw for 18,190 yards and 124 touchdowns over 10 NFL seasons.The “Ruston Rifle” graduated from LSU in 1983 with a degree in business administration and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2016.Many other LSU football alumni have also donned No. 7 throughout their careers, including Ali Highsmith, Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu and Leonard Fournette.
