The Buffalo Sabres seem to have missed what many considered their clearest opportunity to acquire Hellebuyck from the Jets, who reportedly preferred to complete a deal before the NHL Draft so Buffalo could include the No. 4 overall pick in the exchange. Despite this, the two teams could not agree on a price, and the deal did not go through.
Martin Biron, the former Sabres goaltender who now covers the team in broadcasting for WGR 550, weighed in on the situation this week during an appearance on the local radio show. “I do think that Winnipeg is in a bit of a — kind of a tricky situation here,” Biron said. “Yeah, obviously Hellebuyck can go back to Winnipeg and play for the Jets this year, but are you so far down the road now that it’s like, ‘You know, we’re gonna get Hellebuyck back but he’s not gonna be happy to be here and we should just make the move, right?’ I think that Winnipeg maybe overplayed their hand before the draft. They were demanding, wanted a certain return and maybe the Sabres weren’t willing to give in. I think now it may soften a little bit.”
Biron’s pointed remark came with a notable kicker: “It’s still a possibility” that Hellebuyck could join the Sabres before the season begins, he said on the radio. Sabres supporters would no doubt welcome the addition of the Olympic gold medalist and multiple-time Vezina Trophy winner to a team already building toward a competitive season in Western New York. Indications were that Hellebuyck was willing to waive his no-trade clause to move to Buffalo, a crucial factor in any potential deal, since a team can only execute it with the goaltender’s consent.
The situation may hinge on whether Hellebuyck can win a staring contest with the Jets and force a move—an outcome that could significantly alter Buffalo’s outlook. After a standout season, the Sabres would become even more formidable with Hellebuyck in net, offering the kind of stability and elite performance that could elevate the franchise into serious contention.
As this saga develops, fans and analysts will continue to monitor the possibility of a mid-summer breakthrough. The Jets’ and Sabres’ internal calculations, the willingness of both teams to negotiate around draft assets, and Hellebuyck’s readiness to relocate will all play critical roles in whether this blockbuster potential becomes a reality before the start of the upcoming season. If a deal does materialize, it would mark a major shift in the balance of power among goaltenders and could reshape the Sabres’ competitive trajectory for years to come, underscoring why discussions surrounding this trade have persisted well beyond the draft period.
