Sabres make Peyton Krebs free agency decision

Sabres locking in Peyton Krebs for the long haul was the outcome after negotiations with the restricted free agent lingered for a time. The Sporting News noted that Krebs and the Buffalo Sabres had not found an immediate path to a contract, prompting questions about what might come next for the 25-year-old center. In the end, Krebs will remain in Buffalo, signing a four-year deal with average annual value of $3.5 million, totaling $14 million. The report from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman indicated the agreement was completed on Monday morning, marking a positive development for a Sabres franchise that just finished its first playoff appearance in 15 years.
Krebs emerged as a steady contributor for Buffalo, appearing in all 82 games and posting 12 goals alongside 27 assists for 39 points. He also tallied 201 hits and 41 blocked shots, both career highs, underscoring his dual impact on offense and physical play. Having turned 25 in January, Krebs has demonstrated reliability and versatility, offering consistent production and presence on the ice. While he may never become a prolific goal scorer, his all-around game makes him a valuable asset for the Sabres.
Drafted 17th overall by the Vegas Golden Knights in 2019, Krebs was part of the sizeable return in the Jack Eichel trade that brought him to Buffalo. The Sabres clearly appreciate what Krebs brings and aimed to keep him as a core piece, ensuring they can rely on his contributions as the team continues to grow. His durability stands out, having played 80 games in 2023-24, 81 in 2024-25, and 82 last season, reinforcing the sense that he is a dependable presence who can be counted on to show up and compete night after night.
With Krebs secured on a long-term contract, the Sabres can trust that he will be there when they need him, a stabilizing factor as they pursue continued progress after their recent playoff appearance. The deal reflects Buffalo’s desire to retain players who provide steady, all-around value and to build a foundation around which their roster can continue to develop.
