​Aug. 7—MITCHELL — A late charge from the Salem Cubs came up short on Friday afternoon, as Volga held on for a 9-7 win in the first round of the Class B state amateur baseball tournament at Cadwell Park.With the win, the Cormorants (15-7) will take on the Lennox Bandits at 7:30 p.m. Monday night in the second round of the Class B state bracket.Volga led 7-0 after the first two innings, thanks to a five-run second inning. That was plenty for Milbank’s Dom Boerger, who was added to the Volga roster as a pickup player and threw seven innings and struck out 12 Salem batters, allowing two hits, two unearned runs and one walk, throwing 81 strikes on 114 total pitches for the win.Bayley Colemer had three hits and three RBIs and Noah Puetz had two hits and two runs for the Cormorants, who were the District 1B tournament champions. Volga had an 8-6 edge in hits but overcame a six-error day in the field.Salem, which ends its season at 8-17, was down 9-3 going to the ninth inning before they scored four times in the top of the final inning. Volga’s Kyler Bezdichek recorded four outs in relief, allowing four hits, five runs (three earned) and walked three. Jordan Sagedahl came on and earned the save for Volga, picking up the final two outs.For the Cubs, Cole Cheeseman had two hits and two runs scored and Kyle Tuschen drove in two runs. Michael Zeman scored twice for Salem, as well. The Salem batters struck out 13 times as a team. Starter Aiden Scheetz threw 3 2/3 innings for the Cubs, allowing eight hits, nine runs and striking out two. Dexter Payne, the former Dakota Wesleyan University standout, came on in relief and blanked Volga in the final 4 1/3 innings, striking out eight batters without allowing a hit or walk.
