San Diego starts to turn things around with stellar all-around win

After dropping their series opener to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the San Diego Padres quickly fought their way back into the win column. The club rode a revived performance from Germán Márquez and a three-run homer from Jake Cronenworth to secure a convincing victory over Arizona. It seemed at first that the Padres’ recent struggles might continue when Márquez loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning. That predicament stemmed from an error by Cronenworth at first base, though Márquez would have faced trouble regardless. With the bases loaded, he walked Max Kepler for the game’s first run before Sung-Mun Song turned an unassisted double play to escape the jam.
Cronenworth answered right away with a deep shot to right field off starter Zac Gallen, giving San Diego the lead. The score would remain unchanged on both sides for the next eight innings. It was a standout performance for the Friars after Monday night’s shutout defeat. They’ll need to sustain this level of play to win the series against Arizona.
Arizona, dealing with rotation injuries, promoted Cabrera a few weeks ago to bolster the staff. The right-hander has pitched only three games for the Diamondbacks and initially showed promise, debuting with five scoreless innings against the Minnesota Twins but then regressing, allowing seven runs over his last 8 1/3 innings.
Cabrera is a pitcher the Padres should be able to handle tonight. His two main offerings—a cutter and a four-seamer—both sit at below-average velocities (about 89.6 mph and 93.4 mph, respectively). Although San Diego has not faced Cabrera before, the Padres shouldn’t find him overly challenging to solve.
There’s no sugarcoating it: King needs to rebound soon. This is his final start before the All-Star break, and a solid performance would certainly boost the team’s confidence heading into the layoff. Yet King has shown signs of improvement lately. In his last three outings, he’s yielded six runs over 17 1/3 innings, an ERA of 3.12. That’s a marked improvement from his 4.69 ERA over his previous seven appearances and a slight uptick from the 3.52 ERA he’s posted for the season. If he can sustain that recent momentum by silencing Arizona’s hitters, it could propel San Diego forward and give them a much-needed upper hand.
After crossing four runs on three hits in the first inning, the Padres’ lineup cooled somewhat, producing just three more hits without adding to the total. They didn’t require more than that last night, but they left several scoring opportunities on the table as Arizona’s pitching staff escaped numerous mistakes. They’ll enjoy a little more breathing room tonight against the rookie Cabrera, provided King can recover from his recent funk.
Manny Machado and Cronenworth formed a productive one-two punch, and the revamped lineup paid dividends from the outset. The Padres showed they can adapt and plate runs efficiently when their pitching and defense cooperate, signaling a potential turning point in their campaign as they look to regain rhythm and momentum.
In summary, San Diego seized control early, rode Márquez’s resurgence and Cronenworth’s timely blast to a decisive win, and entered a pivotal stretch with renewed confidence. If King can recapture his form and if Cabrera’s young arm proves manageable, the Padres could leverage this victory into a favorable series outcome against Arizona as they push toward the second half of the season.
